The number one response I get from my students when I ask them why they don't look happy when they enter my classroom is this: "It's not you, Miss, we just don't like English." Their English classes have traditionally made them read books that curriculum writers and teachers find valuable but that the students find boring. For students in a non-traditional high school, that method of teaching just isn't working. As adults, we read what interests us; why can't my students do the same? I have spent a lot of money building a classroom library, and many of my students have expressed their gratitude, so much so that some have even donated their old books! However, I still am coming up short when it comes to certain genres, and some of my students are missing out. I simply cannot afford to continue growing my classroom library on my own. Would you be willing to help every student in my classroom find a book that they love?
