These books all focus on resiliency and feelings. They are for ages 3-12. They include topics on social-emotional skills, mindfulness, family, making friends, recognizing emotions, regulating behavior, being a helper, and kindness. And they also feature a diverse representation of people, including people of color. The Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) found that only 11.9% of children's books published in 2019 featured black children and only 5.3% featured Latinx children. My kiddos need to see kids like them to help them relate and envision success. Using these books in group therapy, SEL class lessons, and individually will not only help students with feelings and regulation, but will also help them grow and become amazing citizens.
