Providing students with flexible seating choices during independent work time I think helps students stay focused and engaged, and for longer periods of time. A lot of first graders tend to get very wiggly and restless, so being able to wiggle and bounce slightly while working gets out that feeling of needing to move, while also providing students with a fun and intriguing spot to work at. This year I had a low table where 2 students could sit on wobble spots (I only have 2 wobble spots), and every student would always ask to sit there every week. My goal is to have enough flexible seating choices for my whole class!
