My students consist of 99% African American and 1% Hispanic. We are a Title 1, inner- city school located in a low income area. My Kindergarten students are naturally playful and eager to learn new things. To get their reading wheels turning, I want to find stimulating activities that are fun and educational. Since the beginning of Kindergarten, my students have been building their sight word vocabulary for common words at their developmental level. Sight words are those most common and frequent words used in our everyday reading and writing. They are service words which hold ideas together, there is no picture attachment. Learning sight words help readers to maintain speed and fluency by not getting "caught up" on meaning. Mastering sight words, combined with the 5 essential components of reading, will allow students to read simple books by applying reading strategies to figure out unknown words. My students are ready for the next level to becoming independent readers.
