These books and other materials will be used to start our Reading Buddies Program. In this program, students grades 5th-8th with younger siblings aged 0-5 take home a different book each week to read to their younger sibling. Since 80% of brain development occurs in the first 5 years, it is essential that their younger siblings are read to. This buddy system of older children reading to younger children not only helps the younger children build vocabulary and have a better chance at being ready for kindergarten but also helps the older children become more confident and fluent readers.
