The students that would benefit from this project are in kindergarten, first, and second grade. Their families are bilingual or speak only Spanish in the home. The students that attend our school face poverty, hunger, and a lack of educational resources. Research has shown that being read to in an interactive way (asking questions, making comments, relating the story to the life of the child) can have very positive effects on their vocabulary and grammar, literacy skills, and their attitude toward books and learning. Families will receive instruction and demonstration regarding the most effective way to read to children during an evening class. Following the class, each family will get to go home with bilingual books to read.
