I envision my students getting excited to learn about energy and energy transfers because they will be competing in the national KidWind Challenge. While students create wind turbines, they will be applying what they learned in sixth grade about forms of energy while they research and learn about energy transfer and transformations. Students will be applying their knowledge of the scientific method, inquiry skills, wind energy and generating electricity to design efficient, high output machines. Another component of the competition is creativity and quality of work. A seventh grade science teacher and I have been getting our students involved with this wonderful activity for the past three years. We are in need of well-constructed, reliable fans to produce the wind energy needed for testing the student-designed blades This project will improve my classroom because it will expose my students to the latest technology and require them to demonstrate twenty-first century learning skills. The project is a great example of a STEAM lesson because it will incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. I will collaborate with three other subject area teachers to demonstrate the connection of science to other content areas. This project is a learning experience my students will cherish.
