Putting a book in a child's hand during read-aloud time makes the book come alive! Listening to a story is fun and enjoyable, but children can learn so much from just seeing the printed words. They start to recognize spelling patterns and notice nuances of phrasing and speech. The words can be studied. Giving each student a book to hold during our read-aloud time helps them to be more connected to the text. Rather than staring blankly, the students have words to follow. They feel much more involved in the activity. Our read-alouds will serve as the focal point for next year's gifted curriculum. For example, 4th graders will read Space Case to connect to the "Stars, Planets, and Moon" Science unit. Second graders will be learning about the Animal Kingdom while enjoying The One and Only Ivan. My students' literacy experiences will be much richer when they can all hold a piece of learning in their hands!
