My ultimate goal is to help students discover how much chemistry is infused in their daily lives, and how it has impacted human life over time. Research shows that as students move into middle and then high school, their interest in science drops, and so I try to counteract that by making chemistry relatable to each and every one of my students. My students often voice how much they enjoy their history classes, so by linking science and history, I can also increase engagement in an abstract subject, like chemistry. By donating to this project, you are helping get books into the hands of my students which is important to support their literacy in all subjects and to help break the screen time cycle. My school's library staff are instrumental in reaching our diverse student population with any number or genres of reading materials and interactive programs. They helped inspire me to support and encourage literacy in my own classroom, linking it with my content. The impact of all of the screens on our eyes and minds is still being investigated and understood by scientists and medical professionals, but many reports highlight the detrimental effects of too much screen time. Adding some non-digital resources to my curriculum can help give my students a break from their screens while still engaging their minds. The book I want to give my students access to in my classroom, Napoleon's Buttons, beautifully links the importance and significance of a handful of different molecules with considerable changes in human history. This book will be a respite from screen overload and will help make chemistry easier to grasp by connecting my students' interest in history and their experience as human beings with science.
