Historical fiction is a highly engaging and exciting genre for young readers as they begin to learn more about history and the world before them. This genre helps readers to make connections across content areas all while "traveling in time." In order to appropriately indulge in this genre, our class is in need of a variety of historical fiction and informational texts from different time periods. These texts will not only help my students to grow as readers, but also as young historians as they continue to connect to the people and places of the past. We will use these books to create book sets, where students can dive into each time period through historical fiction stories and then research any questions through informational text from the relevant time period. These students have always shown an interest in history and literature, and this project will help to nurture their interests while improving literacy.
