Dyslexia, by definition, is a phonemic awareness deficit. The use of laptop computers in my dyslexia resource classroom will help students access research-based learning platforms called Read Write Type and Wordy Qwerty. Dr. David Kilpatrick indicated in his book, Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties, that these programs combined with high-quality teacher instruction led to statistically significant gains in reading skills including phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, typing, and comprehension. Dyslexia students additionally will be able to gain access to audiobooks which give them access to the grade-level texts they would otherwise not be able to access. This will help them develop listening comprehension, improve higher-order thinking skills, and build confidence.
