Seeing diverse authors and main characters in children's literature is a more recent movement in children's book publishing, and many of the titles we are requesting have only been published within the last year or two. While we have made efforts to ensure variety and representation in our school library collection, we are always endeavoring to increase diverse book choices for our students by staying current in children's literature. In our school library and in library classes this year, we are making a more concerted effort to highlight and read books that amplify diverse voices or main characters. These kinds of books resonate with our students and also are amazing tools to teach difficult topics like social justice, inequality of all kinds, and equity, diversity, and inclusion. Because of the diversity of our student population, it is important that our school library provides an equally ample diverse book collection. We see directly the impact these kinds of books have on our students. We see it in the smiles they wear on their faces when the main character on the cover looks like themselves or a familiar family member. In the book PARKER LOOKS UP: AN EXTRAORDINARY MOMENT, a girl named Parker Curry and her mother, tell the story of the impact seeing a portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama at the National Portrait Museum has on little two-year-old Parker Curry. Seeing that portrait opened the door of possibilities for Parker and eventually inspired the writing and publishing of her first book at only four-years-old. We also see the impact in the questions students ask and discussions we have in class after reading these books. We're able to genuinely say to our students, "If you can dream it, you can be it."
