Children get a deeper understanding of a theme or subject when they can make connections by seeing pictures, hearing words, listening to stories. We also use our books to find the letter/sound of the day. The children talk and share with friends, increasing their communication skills from 2-3 words to 6-8 words in a sentence, narrative skills, answering the who, what, when , where questions and increasing vocabulary. My Prek students love to talk about what they see on each page. Some children even pretend to read by pointing to the pictures and making up their own version of the book. (creativity and imagination) My students need more books with real pictures to make a connection. (space-rocket, robots, moon, sun, earth, astronaut, bears-black, grizzly, panda, polar, farm buildings and tractors, farm animals, crops, seasons-winter-snow-what we wear, spring, summer, fall-leaves-colors, bugs, butterflies, water, rocks, mountains, lake vs river) We also talk about families, where we live, what we eat, feelings, sharing, caring and being part of a community (family and school).
