My students benefit from specially-designed instruction that contributes to their overall physical, mental, emotional, and social development. Yoga education does just that. As a special education teacher and yoga educator, it is my job to empower students to essential life skills, such as building a foundation of a lifetime of health and wellness. Did you know that individuals with disabilities are 53% more likely to be obese compared to neurotypical individuals? By increasing my students' physical activity levels, they are not only learning how to maintain a healthy weight, but live healthier lives. While yoga addresses the physical needs of my students, it also provides them with opportunities to address their mental, emotional, and social needs. Yoga teaches the inward practice of discovering self-awareness, or identifying who and how you are being at any moment. Teaching self-awareness to my students causes them to check in with imbalances that often occur because of their disabilities. Students learn how to bring awareness to their emotions and regulate these emotions through the practice of yoga. With your help, my students will have access to the materials that will teach them the essential life skills they need to maintain their physical, mental, and social emotional health.
