Our school library sponsors the READ WOKE reading initiative at our school. READ WOKE challenges students to read books about characters living lives that are vastly different from their own. As students accumulate minutes read, they earn electronic badges and visit the READ WOKE treasure chest as a reward. Currently, we have books, pencils, bookmarks, stickers, and other small trinkets in our treasure chest. Even though the students love the treasure chest, they constantly asked that their favorite snacks be added this school year. I surveyed our readers and the cookies, brownie brittle, chips, Quest bars, and personal pan pizzas that we are requesting were the items they requested the most. Adding these snack items will create an extra layer of excitement about our reading program. As the school librarian, I strive to create groups for students who are not athletic or may not be the strongest academically. Our READ WOKE group promotes important discussions about world topics and social issues affecting kids their age. I am so proud that through reading, kids are having important conversations and identifying with others who are not as fortunate as themselves. Your donation will help support the warm and inviting space we've created for kids to be themselves, socialize with their peers, and encourage their love of reading.
