Many of my students come from low income families. Currently, a new school is being built for them behind our old school. In addition to this project, an additional construction project is also happening along the entire block of the school. As a result, our school has been temporarily moved to a new location. In this new location, we are fortunately away from all of the construction BUT have very limited supplies and furniture. Our students have lost many of the classroom furniture they are used to, including our class rug. Our class rug served as a place for the class to sit comfortably and as a group for all our lessons. Each student had their own space that faced the teacher, making them active participants in the lessons. I am concerned that if my students come into the classroom and do not see a carpet, then they will not be engaged and focus in all of the very important lessons and activities that happen in first grade, many of the students first experience in school.
