Education is like Texas weather; it is always changing! However, the need for assessment will always remain constant. Assessment can be used to identify the strength and weaknesses of students. It can also be utilized to evaluate instructional effectiveness. Most importantly, assessments play a role in improving the quality of education students receive. Assessment is often overlooked in Physical Education classes mostly due to the large number of students the teacher has to oversee, and the small amount of time available to assess. Thankfully digital tools such as Plickers enable teachers to assess large groups with ease and effectiveness! Plickers are a real-time assessment instrument that the students use to answer questions. The students hold the Plickers in the air in a certain direction based on their answers, and the teacher takes a snapshot of their answers using a tablet or smart phone. Plickers can be used at the beginning of a unit to assess the students’ prior knowledge. They could also be used at the end of a lesson to evaluate student learning and the lesson’s effectiveness. They could also be used to answer fun survey questions that help to develop a friendly rapport between the students. By using Plickers, my students will receive an efficient form of assessment that will help to increase their knowledge and to develop connections with their peers.
