Seeing people who look, act, and experience life like yourself in media makes a person feel included in society! It reinforces positive views an individual has of themselves and what they can achieve. Representation of culture in media is crucial to what a student believes they can accomplish. My fabulous fifth graders have a diverse racial and cultural background. Celebrating this diversity in the classroom through the literature I present is vital to their success and their view of themselves as good readers. I want to give them positive examples of successful, strong people for them to aspire to be like!
