In my classroom, we work a lot on social emotional learning and understanding our feeling and reactions to the feelings, even in core content subjects! Because of COVID restrictions, last year my room was very bare. This year, with your help, I hope to provide the student the flexible, calming space they need!
With this project, I will be able to provide my students with a sensory safe space for their academic intervention lessons as well as for my students who struggle with emotional regulation and sensory overstimulation. The largest part of my project is a variety of flexible seating options. I have chosen a variety because every student in my classroom has their own individual sensory needs. I have a workspace set aside for the yoga ball chairs and an area in my classroom cleaned out to turn into a space for floor seating options. The yoga balls will be incredibly helpful for my "wigglers" or as a calming station for students who just need to bounce it out. Many of my student prefer to work on the floor and the floor cushions and lap desks give them an opportunity to do so comfortably.
I will also be able to provide my students a calming, sensory corner in my room. In this corner they will have visual guides, a variety of fidgets and calm down tools, relaxed lighting and comfortable seating. I teach a social and behavioral skills class as well as incorporate social emotional learning into all of my subject lessons. Having a sensory corner in our class gives them a safe space to go when they are overwhelmed and need time and a safe space to work through their emotions. I will be incredibly excited to provide them this opportunity with your help!
