State testing requirements state that every student in the room must have access to a handheld calculator or no one can use one. An overwhelming majority of my students own a TI-30xa calculator, but because they all don't, they won't be able to use them during the state test unless we have enough to cover the kids who were unable to buy one. The school will not buy the calculators because they do not see the need, there is a digital calculator in the testing platform that all students can use. But students who use the digital calculator are at a disadvantage over those with the handheld as the TI-30xa has many features that are not included in the digital calculator, most important of which is the ability to do operations with fractions and easily switch between fractions and decimals.
