Can you remember how chaotic middle school was for you? We didn't have the distractions like some of our students have to wade through today. It was a simpler time. So many of our students at Deland Middle would benefit greatly from having a safe and restorative space to reconnect and refocus on what truly matters for them. Finding what motivates some of our ESE students can be a challenge, but sometimes just a little bit of guidance from a trusting and caring adult is all it takes to truly remember that you are here at school to learn and grow. I want to create a space for our kids to learn what meditation is, practice growth mindset with a creative mental toolbox, and train their brains to focus when tough and distracting times call for it. Even the most mundane circumstances can provide us with an opportunity to learn and grow. It seems that some of our students have forgotten how to enjoy this process, but this mindset can be can be reversed. We have the ability to create space for our students to train their brains to to focus on that growth no matter how difficult the challenge seems. Having a refocus room for some of our students who just need that extra bit of inspiration can create waves for other students to be inspired by. Consistently reconnecting with ourselves through meditative and restorative practices with our students in a safe and calming space can change the course of a day, year, or even life.
