The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton inspired me to read more and become a teacher! Giving students the opportunity to read and complete a novel changes students' lives. They have a new sense of self-confidence and identity as they complete this novel. Students identify with the characters of this book because they understand the struggle, cliques, and the power of family. Many students do not have a traditional family due to foster care and other situations beyond their control - this novel reflects the power of having friends who are family. Reading this book promotes personal growth and self-reflection.
