I work with multilingual learners who are reading below the benchmark for their grade. Studies show that the stronger a child's L1 (first language) is, the easier it'll be for that child to acquire L2 (their 2nd language). Furthermore, last school year my mentor coached me on the importance of multilingualism in the work of reading intervention. Students who connect new concepts in English to familiar concepts in their home language will develop stronger and more robust neural connections. Additionally, my school is currently distance learning, which means communication between teachers and families has become more vital than ever before. My students deserve a teacher who knows their way around the Spanish language.
