6th grade is the first year at my school where students are learning science every day. We begin by learning what science is and practicing the scientific method as we do our own investigations with marigold seed growth and rust development. The students really enjoy doing hands on labs, but my classroom is not an actual science lab. Therefore, I need to be creative with engaging labs that are also safe. One way we do this is to explore how to use different scientific measurement tools such as balances, graduated cylinders, and spring scales. The additional measurement and density tools will be very beneficial as students fully understand the tools after getting the opportunity to use them. I have set up centers in the past to allow them to do so, and I'd really like to expand those centers so more equipment can be used in different ways. When we study the engineering design process, we spend some time focusing on how nature influences scientific development with a lab on the cocklebur and the invention of hook and loop fasteners. My students would be fascinated by the other example shown in the Biomimicry display. Finally, we study scientific models and simulations before we get into the basics of the periodic table and the structure of atoms. I borrow models of the human body from other teachers, but the atom model is perfect for this unit. They will see the atom in 3-D as they design their own, and they will understand the importance of modeling in science as they use this atom model to study such a complicated topic.
