Daily, I have to remind my students not to pick at their painted chairs. It is a distraction and with trying to get my students reading at grade level, we cannot afford any additional distractions. I constantly remind my students to "body check" to remind them that their hands should be on top of their desk rather than picking their chair. Hours are spent after school sanding the chairs down trying to make sure they aren't peeling but I can't keep up with the maintenance. Fresh, clean chairs would not only benefit my students' ability to pay attention but would add to the productive classroom environment as well.
