Each day my classroom of students learn skills that will assist them in becoming an important part of today's future society. An important part of this learning experience is the differentiated training that I provide them through vocational opportunities which includes Community Based Instruction and daily Social Skills lessons that will help them to learn the independent skills they will need as they develop into young men and women of tomorrow. Many of the students within my Life Skills classes will require assistance for most of their lives to be a functional member and so with that in mind I must consider daily the fact that it is important to help them learn as many independent skills as I can each day so they will be able to take care of themselves and their own needs as much as possible. It is through the development of quality daily schedules enhanced with vocational opportunities which allows my life skills classes to assist students to achieve their full potential and it is with the additional of a Kitchen Vocational learning environment in my classroom that I can introduce them to the skills they will need grow as individuals. Having a kitchen within my learning environment will allow for weekly (and for some students daily) cooking and cleaning lessons to allow them to develop career skills which can help them become future quality workers and leaders after graduation. Many of my students struggle daily with academic and social tasks, but the hands-on manipulative tasks of working on vocational skills is the best opportunity for them to find a path which they can follow and participate in without struggling with the things which are non-preferred tasks to them, even though they are learning more in a hands-on environment than they do in their academics.
