In the community I work in children are faced with many at risk factors including drug, alcohol, physical abuse, foster families, low income, and so many more things. Due to these factors students have trouble developing relationships with others, trust issues, and being able to feel safe. I always feel it is important to have some sort of dramatic play in the classroom, allowing students to transform out of their own lives and into something fun. I have begun building my dramatic play area as a kitchen because I have found my students gravitate towards cooking, playing house, or playing restaurant (which some parents have jobs in this field). A dramatic play kitchen shows them about sharing and serving others while taking turns.
