Literature encourages, curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking. Having this book at home enables my students to read along while I read, and then they re-read in order to create projects, answer questions, and ask questions. This book is an engaging, often humorous story of one young man's experience of traveling to California during The Gold Rush. Not only will this book enhance their reading skills, it will also enable them to make connections to the characters and setting that will help make this social studies standard meaningful. This book is also a springboard to studying the experiences of people of many cultures and nationalities during this time in history.
