After receiving these novels, each student in my fourth-grade class will be able to personally read and follow along with the well-loved story of the Watson family and their experiences during the Civil Rights era in Alabama. Every January-February, I make it a priority to teach my students about the impact of Black individuals in the United States both historically and currently. The Watsons Go to Birmingham helps students relate to the 9-year-old main character's experience growing up as a Black boy in the United States during the Civil Rights movement. My students have always loved this story and its historical implications, and I'd love to be able to share the story on an individual level to strengthen my students' literacy, comprehension, and historical knowledge.
