Making sure that my first graders have well-stocked and rich home libraries has become even more of a priority during the pandemic. It is often difficult for first graders to find appropriate texts at home that they can read independently. Research shows that students need to read a variety of books at their independent reading level in order to grow and make progress as readers. Early reader books are often not easily accessible to my students from home. Students are not able to take out books from the school library this year due to the pandemic, and visiting the local libraries is difficulty for many families at this time. This is why it is more important than ever that beginning readers have adequate home libraries. This project will help my students build their home libraries with a variety of fiction and nonfiction books at their independent reading levels. Many of my students and their families are bilingual. It is also important that these students have a variety of bilingual texts available at home so that they can enjoy reading with their families in both languages. The goal is to have enough books for students to have the experience of being in a library or bookstore. I am hoping to have them "shop" for books among these titles and bring them home. When we have remote learning days, or when they are doing the remote part of their day, they will then have books that they have selected that are at their independent reading level to enjoy at home.
