Having quality art materials such as paints, colored pencils, markers, and crayons in the art room or at home is important for students to feel valued themselves and through their artwork. Having multicultural art media is also important so students can relate to the art they are creating. Other art materials such as pencils, erasers, and individual pencil sharpeners are necessities that students do not always have access to either in the art room or at home. Classroom caddies help organize materials in the art room, and help students organize their space to maximize productivity. Our projects focus on "Big Ideas" or themes such as Community, Home, Identity, and Dreams- to name a few. These Big Ideas are broad and open enough for students to bring their own experiences and perspectives to the table to create unique, beautiful, and powerful works of art. The art room is a place where being different and unique is celebrated. It is a place where all the liberal arts (or areas of study) can mesh and intertwine. It helps reinforce learning in other subject areas and allows students to express themselves, relate to others, and problem solve in a healthy manner. I believe having exposure to a wide range of art media is important to help flourish and foster creativity. The harsh line of a pencil or the smooth flow of watercolor tell and express a different story. With such a diverse population of students and narratives in the classroom having a wide range of art materials will help students find what vehicle best helps them to express themselves.
