I am a first-year ELA teacher who has been educating virtually since the beginning of the year, so I have selected materials for this project that will help ease my students back into the classroom while also providing them with a sensory-based environment to address their educational needs. My students have been affected by both The Flint Water Crisis and COVID-19, so I believe the use of sensory materials will help them combat the challenges stacked against them. For instance, the fidget kits can address anxious students who are coming back to the classroom for the first time this year, while the light filters can create more focus by establishing a calmer environment. Additionally, the active tilt stools, balance ball chairs, and fidget chair bands will permit students to sit comfortably while also giving them an outlet for extra energy. Moreover, as a first-year teacher who is headed into the classroom for the first time this year, the visual exemplar materials that are included in this project (chalkboard writing chart, parts of speech board, and reading and writing bulletin board set) will help guide students through grammar studies and the writing process by acting as visible goals that they are able to read and use to inform their own assignments and projects!
