Tony Robbins said, “The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives.” Every aspect of one’s life hinges on that person’s ability to communicate. Communication is paramount from having one’s very basic needs met, to being able to express individuality through unique thoughts, ideas, emotions, and perspectives. Communication is key in experiencing and maintaining relationships with others and making meaningful deeper connections. The ability to communicate is a basic human right that should not be treated as a privilege or reserved for only those without needs or for those who acquire language and communicate in the traditional sense. There is a population of people being silenced daily because they are atypical communicators. Without intervention through assistive technology, those people will continue to go unheard; they will continue to be denied their “voice” and basic right to communicate. My goal for every person in my class is that they are given the opportunity to find their “voice”, express their opinions, tell a loved one how they feel, communicate preferences, tell jokes, interact in the classroom and with peers, and, ultimately, to be transformed into active communicators and participants in every environment. Physical and/or cognitive differences should not impede anyone’s opportunities to become communicators. I am privileged to be able to work with this exceptional population of students whose communication abilities range from verbal to minimally or nonverbal. These students require different tools and devices in order to be successful communicators. Providing them with the right communication tools can unlock their “voices” allowing them to interact with the world around them. I am requesting a variety of Augmentative and Alternative Communication mid-tech devices from the GoTalk line to aid in the communication of special needs individuals.
