Building with blocks is an engaging and developmentally appropriate practice in an early childhood classroom. Through interactions in the block center students learn social skills while collaborating with their peers as well as learn problem solving skills. With intention of the classroom teacher, supplemental learning materials added to the block center can encourage learning in physics, community building, STEAM learning, and soft skills that can be applied throughout a child's life. Examples: Various animals could be added to learn about their habitats. Cars and balls can be added to encourage the use of ramps to engage in hands on physics experiments. Recycled materials could be added to encourage creativity and STEAM experiences. Replicas of the community of which the students live could be built or new communities could be designed using familiar environmental print. Endless possibilities exist in an early childhood classroom with building blocks!
