The traditional classroom was not part of the educational experience for most students over the past year. While the methods of instruction and learning had to change the expectation of learning outcomes was the same. For many students, remote learning was not ideal and posed many hurdles. One issue that continually arose was the ability to hear the teacher due to background noise in the student's home. "I can't hear you!" was a common phrase during live lessons. The ability to hear clearly was also an issue for both remote and in-person learning. When students were in-person they struggled with hearing the teacher through the mask. This hindered the development of phonological awareness, the ability to recognize and manipulate spoken language. For example rhyming words, beginning and ending sounds, and alliteration. Using headphones for remote learning created a quiet learning environment for students. Unfortunately, all families could not provide this needed item. It is my hope that ALL students in my class will have this much-needed item this year. Whisper Phone allows students to really hear how they are pronouncing words as they repeat what they hear and later on begin to read. This encourages better speech as well as developing a deeper understni=ding of the spoken word.
