I've purposely chosen these books to diversify my classroom library. In education, making connections is key, and I want my students to see themselves, their neighborhoods and their family stories on the covers of books and in the pages they turn. The elementary school's student body is 95% Hispanic, and my books should be as well. These books will serve as mentor texts to inspire student writing. It's not just that most of these books focus on Hispanic culture; they are also masterfully written and tackle universal topics. I have also selected African-American and Asian-American stories.
