Although many of my students are very outgoing, I have several who have a hard time coping with their anxiety. Recently, our school began a small group therapy for students. My student attending came to me with this idea to create a chill zone in our classroom to give students a quick mental break. The resources in this area would help students calm their nerves, learn positive coping mechanisms, and develop the appropriate social-emotional responses to a peer in distress. This zone will be a come and go space for students. When a student feels anxious, they may enter, set the timer, and use some of the objects to help relieve their nerves. I would love to send home a small packet of information for students to use at home when these situations arise. The items I have chosen for this zone will help students in many ways. For instance, the noise-canceling headphones will help students block the background noise they hear in a typical classroom. I have included fidgets for students as well. By including multiple types, students are able to choose based on their individual needs. I wanted students to be comfortable in this zone. By offering flexible seating, students are able to sit in a way that best suits their needs.
