I am currently a first-year teacher; I began this first-grade position straight out of my student-teaching placement this past December. The biggest challenge my classroom is facing at the moment is the lack of supplies, primarily books. Being fresh out of college, I do not have the finances to be putting any more money into my classroom. The district I am working in has placed a book order for my students; this order includes books levels E-L. However, I have some low leveled readers in my class. The students I have at B/C levels are the students who really need to feel confident and excited about reading. By offering those students more choice and topics to read about, I hope to increase their interest and confidence in reading. Read-aloud was one of my favorite things in elementary school. Studies have shown that read aloud increases attention spans, increases vocabulary, teaches students ways to handle emotion, and increases reading comprehension. We work a lot on having a growth mindset, mindfulness, and kindness in my classroom. I believe that the books I have selected for my classroom will help students grow in each of these areas through these stories.
