As a special education teacher, many of my students in third grade are reading below grade level and are working hard to grow as readers. While reading can be a time of creativity and imagination as students make movies in their head of the words they're reading, many of my students have a hard time engaging in the books they are reading. This is because there aren't many books at lower levels available for them. Students reading at lower levels should have anywhere between 10-15 books in their book boxes at any given time. I struggle to provide enough books for them to have in their boxes, especially new books that they haven't already read to keep them engaged. My hope is that, with new and exciting books at their levels, they will continue to engage in literacy and continue to grow with a new excitement.
