My specific musical background helps me connect with youth, best exemplified in a form of vocal improvisation known in hip-hop culture as a cypher or communal freestyle. A group of individuals gather in a circle and a beat is generated by a member or members of the circle via rhythmic sounds and noises. Members of the circle then often tune in to the sounds to engage in collective exploration of language, rhyme, storytelling and vocal harmonizing.
With the funding of this project - which would provide us with a live looping machine and portable speaker - we will be able to explore and expand on this art-form by having the ability to record each student and mix the live communal recordings in real-time, outdoors.
This practice promotes social and emotional well-being, active listening, and is an opportunity for students to further explore elements of music such as rhythm, tone, harmony and dynamics. It also acts as a safe outlet for students to freely express themselves and embrace vulnerability; both components that connect to the therapeutic value of this art form.
