Currently, our 6th grade students are learning how to calculate the area and perimeter of triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and circles, as well as two dimensional composite figures. To boost their motivation, I have given them a project where they need to design the blueprints for their own 9-hole mini golf course. Students must draw 6 of their mini golf holes while graphing three of their holes on a coordinate plane (for a total of 9 holes). After they complete their blueprints, each student will choose their favorite mini golf hole of the 9 they designed and build it in the school hallways using cardboard and masking tape, creating a mini golf course where 6th grade families and school staff will compete after school. Titled "The Soaring Eagles Open", my hope is to reuse most of the requested materials each year and make this a new school tradition. Each year, the winner's name will be added to the trophy and placed in the main office to commemorate history!
