My students are acquiring digital literacy more rapidly than their peers, but in this year of Virtual Learning, what they are missing is books: real, paper, printed books! Numerous studies have shown the value of growing up in homes with books, but most of my students lack the resources to establish home libraries. Having books readily available in the home increases academic achievement, vocabulary attainment, attention, and future career opportunities. I want to give students their own copies of quality chapter books which we will use during Virtual Book Clubs. Through book talks, students will learn and practice strategies to increase reading comprehension as well as vital speaking and listening skills. Best of all -- the book will be theirs to keep!
