In order for students to become engaged in reading independently and improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, they must find a connection to the text. This short autobiography fits the bill as one that is relevant to my students’ lives. It explores 16-year-old Janice Wesley’s decision to take a stand and go to jail by participating in the Birmingham, Alabama Children’s Crusade to protest the racial segregation that prevailed in her city and throughout the South. The author is a gifted storyteller and engaging speaker who has already agreed to make a virtual visit to my class and discuss her experiences and the book. What better way to get students reading than by giving them the opportunity to talk with the author in real life!
