Creating opportunities to engage struggling readers with quality literature that will motivate them to want to read more is my goal. As a special education teacher, I find my students do not like to read. They struggle with being able to read independently and understand the text. When a student struggles because they are more than two years behind their same-aged peers, they become unmotivated and disinterested in learning. This is the first series that my fifth graders have voiced their interest in wanting to read. The books I selected range in topics from Pompeii to shark attacks. They were written by an author who was also a struggling reader as a child.
