For many students, math is an abstract concept that they just can’t see themselves understanding, let alone applying in their everyday lives. However, small tools can make a big difference in helping kids connect calculations to actual real-world scenarios. Instead of looking at a picture of a prism, they can build it right on their desk. Instead of imagining what 3 yards looks like, we can lay it out on the floor right in front of them. This tactile interaction with mathematical concepts can help bridge the gap between the concrete and the abstract. Many of the manipulatives I have requested are available for free as a digital online tool, but even these force students to visualize the depth, size, or composition of an object. For budding learners, this is not always an attainable strategy and it stands in the way of their deeper understanding. To touch, feel, hold, observe – all of these bring math off the paper and into reality. Physical tools also carry the added face-to-face collaboration with peers. Together, they can work side by side to construct a model of a cube, then calculate its volume. They can remove a block here and analyze together how that movement changed the surface area of their shape. The possibilities are endless when we put proper tools in the hands of a child, ready to explore.
