I am hoping to engage in the 2021 "March Book Madness" picture book bracket with my students to continue to foster their enthusiasm for reading and provide windows into other experiences, cultures, and life lessons through read alouds. March Book Madness is a simple online bracket-style tournament that matches books in one-on-one "games." My students can each submit their own vote, or we can vote as a class, through a simple google form; no information is shared. Every year this is one of my students' very favorite opportunities; we have so much fun putting the bracket up in the hallway on a bulletin board and talking up the matches and predictions of the winners. In addition to the March Book Madness books, I am hoping to build my classroom library for our reading unit: 2nd grade series books: noticing how characters grow and change across books. Many of the series I am hoping to receive are chapter books that are actually at second grade reading levels (that my young students are so proud to read,) AND include diverse characters. Our classroom libraries should have books in which children can see themselves and the diversity of the world.
