Distance learning has come with many challenges. The lack of math manipulatives is one of those challenges. Currently, I use math visuals from online apps or my own math manipulatives to display a math concept. I know that if my students had math manipulatives at home they would be able to grasp math concepts with much greater success. There is no doubt that manipulatives would give my students a hands-on experience that is critical to their learning. For example, if my students were to have base-ten blocks that are color-coded, they would be able to use these tools to understand place value. This is true because if my students were trying to understand how the number 27 is comprised of tens and ones, they could use the tens and ones base-ten blocks to represent that number. Another math manipulative that would benefit my students is the number chart to 120. With it, my students would be able to point to every number as they count. They would also be able to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s as they circle the numbers. My students would be able to see various patterns on the number chart that appear as a result of skip counting. A hands-on experience is invaluable. Again, please help me give my students math manipulatives in order to give them the experience to conceptualize math problems.
