My students are such wonderful people and they have been put through so much this past year. They are living through a global health crisis, putting so much of their formative years on pause, navigating for some degree of normalcy. In order to attend school in person, face coverings are mandatory. My students are trying so hard but the face coverings they have been wearing are not working anymore. Not only has our state modified the face-covering specifications, whereas what many of them finally got used to is no longer permitted. My students have vocalized their frustrations that they are not able to find ones that they can safely and comfortably wear for an entire school day. Rather than yelling, "pull up your masks" at them, all day every day, I asked my students what I can do to help them cover their faces properly so they are no longer uncomfortable, struggling to breathe, and in turn struggling to focus in school, but also mindful of the fact that the overall goal is to keep everyone safe so our building can remain open. Students have told me there's a specific face mask that is breathable and actually prohibits their noses from peeking out. Unfortunately, many families in my community have been hit hard by the effects of this pandemic, and cannot afford to purchase a more expensive mask when various organizations have donated cloth masks to our students. However, these cloth masks are too small for my growing eighth-graders. They simply cannot make do with what was previously given to them. I am requesting this specific type of face mask to help my students stay safe yet also to stay comfortable so we can continue our overall common goal of staying open.
