Our students currently do not have a designated space that allows them to safely calm down or proactively take get-ready-to-learn breaks; many of our students are experiencing sensory dysregulation with behavioral outcomes. We hope to provide students with a calming de-escalation space, and the tools they need learn important self regulation skills. Students need a designated space within Congress Elementary where they can calm down, wake up, or participate in activities that help them self-regulate; Per Greg Santucci, OTR (2020), “Kids do well if they can.” Many of our students struggle with anxiety, depression, and mental health or social-emotional difficulties that get in the way of their ability to learn and feel safe and calm at school. This can be for many reasons, such as a difficult home environment, worries about the global pandemic, or a mental health diagnosis. Our staff hopes to support our students' social emotional growth and ability to cope by teaching them the foundational self regulation skills they need to be successful and ready-to-learn. This room is a component of providing that important foundation for learning.
