The curriculum that we use in my class was recently updated to reflect more rigorous academic expectations. This increased rigor requires the use of more advanced manipulatives. Having these manipulatives in the classroom will provide visually appealing, tactile exploration experiences for my students. Research has shown that the use of manipulatives can greatly enhance the learning of students; especially those with special needs. My students are eager to explore using the manipulatives we currently have, however there are not enough for everyone and sharing and waiting to "take a turn" can often result in students losing interest and becoming distracted and losing the chance to achieve the "aha" moment. Having enough of these manipulatives will provide my students with the opportunity to expand their mathematical knowledge.
